Kakadu
Day Sixteen - Kakadu, NT
Campsite - $38.00 per night at 2 nights
Fuel - $71.60 at Pine Creek service station
90km
Tour - $366.00 - Croc tour at Cooinda
We take our time packing up from Mataranka, washing is up to date (we had a wet bed the night before we left) so I was up washing and using the dryer at 6am (before the oldies needed it) we head back to Katherine and then to Kakadu. If you haven't been here before this National Park is massive and you need a pass to stay. This was $100 for the five of us for 7 days. We wanted to book into Cooinda (but was booked out) so we head back down the road about 10km to Mardugal. This is a no power or water campsite but it has rangers so there is a charge, $38 per night. They do have showers and flushing toilets. You can park your caravan where ever you like. We pick a nice spot to stay near the river, we could hear the baby crocs at night singing out to there mums and dingos crying. Once it gets dark you stay inside (Mossies are massive)

We head to Maguk at about 11am (a free walk to Barramundi gorge, 40 minute drive from camp) This was a beautiful walk (uphill, sand, rocks, waterways, hot sun) then you get to the top and see the most beautiful water hole (croc free) I packed drink bottles, snacks, towels, thongs (we wear our joggers and socks) We had no idea what it was going to be like so wanted to make sure we were prepared. We swim for half an hour and then head back down again, Kids are tired... Head home, it's about 4pm by this stage. Dinner and bed for all of us.
Day Seveteen - We head back to Maguk early this time to beat the heat, 8.30am. I didn't pack as much this time so I did feel like a pack horse) We wear our thongs and only take a water bottle and our pool noodles this time. The kids took their snorkles (well worth it) We get back to camp about 12pm. Have a bite to eat and then a relax for an hour or so.
We booked a Croc & wetland tour at Cooinda. I really wanted the kids to see Kakadu and crocodiles in their natural habitat. We had to at the Yellow water (South Alligator river) at 2.30pm for a 3pm take off. There was a heap of people (three boats full) of people doing this tour, it went for two hours... This was great for us ALL to see, the landscapes and animals that live in these wetlands together was amazing. We got to see Buffalo, Crocodiles, loads of Native Birds, a beautiful sunset and a tour guide that was full of knowledge along the way. This was a must if think if you can afford it...
Day Eighteen - It was time to leave Kakadu and head for Darwin. Now we have eaten nearly all of our staples (Bread, milk etc) So we have bikkies and cheese in the car for lunch (please don't report me to Docs) when we hit the next biggish town I will do a shop. It's about lunchtime and the kids are hungry for some real food. We came across a Little flag on the road that said food, so we pull in. We are just having lunch and then well head to Darwin.
